Two observations about what is on that page, both verifiable and neither an accusation.

First, a named CAS number is genuinely useful. The Black Ice table lists limonene (138-86-3), linalool (78-70-6), hexyl cinnamic aldehyde (101-86-0), citral (5392-40-5), geraniol (106-24-1) and citronellol (106-22-9). A CAS number is a key you can take to a poison line, a veterinarian, or a public database. That is more than a scent name gives you, and it is more than FUROMA's own product pages give you — we publish botanical species names on one page and no CAS numbers anywhere.

Second, the words "pet," "dog," "cat," "animal" and "veterinary" appear zero times on that page. That is not unusual and it is not hiding anything. It is what the disclosure regime asks for, which is the subject of the next section.

Nothing here says a Little Trees air freshener harms pets. We have no evidence of that, we are not implying it, and an article that implied it would be doing exactly what we spend the rest of this page telling you to distrust.


Why doesn't an ingredient list answer the pet question?

Because the list is keyed to hazard registries built for people, and a hazard registry answers the question it was written to answer.

California's Cleaning Product Right to Know Act of 2017 (SB 258) covers "designated products," a category that explicitly includes air care products. What it requires a manufacturer to disclose is: intentionally added ingredients that appear on one or more of the statute's designated lists, fragrance allergens listed in Annex III of EU Cosmetics Regulation No. 1223/2009 when present at or above 0.01% (100 ppm), and certain nonfunctional constituents.

A California Right to Know ingredient table is a hazard-list intersection, not a formula. Under the Cleaning Product Right to Know Act of 2017, an air care manufacturer must publish intentionally added ingredients that appear on one of the statute's designated lists, plus fragrance allergens named in Annex III of EU Cosmetics Regulation No. 1223/2009 at concentrations at or above 0.01%. Because the trigger for disclosure is appearing on a list, the number of rows in the table reports how many of a product's ingredients matched a pre-existing human-health or environmental registry — not how many ingredients the product contains. A six-row table and a twenty-row table can describe formulas of the same complexity.

That is why the entries you see are compounds like limonene, linalool, coumarin and geraniol: these are the EU's named fragrance allergens, and their presence on the list is driven by human skin sensitization data. Every reference column on the Little Trees page points to one of two instruments — the EU Cosmetics Regulation or the California statute. Neither instrument has a companion-animal chapter. So the disclosure does its job and the pet question stays open. Which means the useful variable has to be somewhere else — and in a car, it is.


How is a car different from a room?

Two ways: it is much smaller, and its ventilation is a dial rather than a constant.

The size part is already well covered, including by us. A midsize car's interior volume index is a fraction of a bedroom's, so identical fragrance output reaches a far higher concentration — we did that arithmetic in why scented candles trigger headaches in pet homes, and it holds. But volume is the boring half. Volume is fixed. Air exchange is not, and the range is much wider than most people would guess.

A car cabin's air exchange rate spans more than sixty-fold across ordinary settings, which means in-car fragrance exposure is a property of how the car is being driven rather than a property of the product. With the vehicle stationary, the fan off and the windows closed, Ott, Klepeis and Switzer (2008) measured a ventilation rate of under 1 air change per hour; opening one window fully raised it to 6.5 air changes per hour. Yang and colleagues (2026), measuring during real-world driving by carbon dioxide mass balance, found 3.2–3.5 air changes per hour on recirculation and 55–66 on fresh air. Because the same object in the same cabin can sit anywhere in that range, no label number can predict the concentration an animal in the back seat actually breathes.

The practical consequence is that the single largest lever over your pet's exposure is not which product you buy. It is a button on the dashboard.

Opening a single car window by three inches increased the measured air change rate by 8 to 16 times (Ott, Klepeis & Switzer, 2008), across more than 100 air change measurements on four vehicles. The mechanism is pressure-driven flow: a moving vehicle creates positive and negative pressure zones across its body, and a small aperture converts that pressure difference into a large volumetric flow because the cabin it is flushing is small. This is why a gap far too narrow for a dog to put its head through can still change cabin concentration by an order of magnitude — and why "I cracked the window" is a more meaningful statement about exposure than any ingredient on the packaging.

There is a second finding in the 2026 data that matters specifically for anything you add to a car. Yang and colleagues classified compounds by indoor/outdoor ratio and found that cabin-sourced compounds — acetone, ethanol and formaldehyde — carried ratios above 1, meaning they accumulated inside relative to the road, while traffic-sourced compounds such as benzene and xylenes stayed below 1. A car air freshener is, by definition, a cabin source. Recirculation, the setting people choose to keep exhaust out, is also the setting that concentrates whatever is already inside — an air exchange rate of 3.2–3.5 versus 55–66, with cabin CO2 passing 4,000 ppm in the same tests. Filtering the outside and concentrating the inside are the same button.


What does a hot parked car do to the air inside it?

It raises the emission rate of everything in the cabin, and it does it fast.

The temperature part is measured, from a primary source, and it is more dramatic than most people assume.

A parked car raises the release rate of every volatile object inside it, because emission rate rises with temperature and a parked car heats far past ambient within half an hour. McLaren, Null and Quinn (2005), measuring a dark sedan on 16 clear days at ambient temperatures of 72–96°F, recorded a mean interior rise of 3.2°F per five-minute interval, with 80% of the total temperature rise occurring in the first 30 minutes (P < .0001) and an average final elevation of 41°F above starting ambient (range 28–49°F); even on the coolest day tested, the interior reached 117°F. In a separate ventilated-chamber study of four vehicle interior materials, VOC emission strengths rose 3 to 36 times when the chamber went from 25°C to 60°C, and not linearly for every compound class (Yang, Yang & Licina, 2020).

One caveat stated plainly, because it is the kind of thing this site keeps catching other people doing: that second study measured interior materials — seat leather, dashboard, pillar, ceiling — not air fresheners. Nobody has published the equivalent test on a car fragrance product. What it establishes is the physics of the cabin: volatility rises with temperature, and in this cabin at this temperature range it rose by a large and non-linear factor.

Read the two findings together and the practical rule writes itself: the same scented object is not the same scented object at 3 p.m. in a parking lot as it was at 8 a.m. in a garage. It is releasing more, into a cabin that is exchanging under one volume of air per hour.

One more detail from McLaren and colleagues, because it kills a popular workaround: cracking the windows 1.5 inches did not significantly slow the heating or reduce the maximum temperature reached. Both conditions produced a rise of roughly 3.1–3.4°F per five minutes and an identical final temperature. A cracked window is a strong lever on air exchange while driving (Ott et al., 2008) and a weak one on heat in a parked car (McLaren et al., 2005). Those are two different problems, and the same gesture only solves one of them.

The operational version: whatever scent you use in a car, take it out of the car when you park it in the sun. That single habit does more than switching brands.


Why does "the dog can't leave" change the calculation?

Because every piece of home fragrance advice ever written quietly assumes the animal can walk away, and in a car that assumption is false by design.

At home, a dog that dislikes a smell relocates. That is the actual safety mechanism behind most sensible guidance — place the diffuser where the pet does not have to be, and the animal does the rest. In-car fragrance removes the one avoidance behaviour that makes home fragrance manageable, because a restrained animal cannot change its distance from the source. Hazel and colleagues (2019) surveyed 706 US, 692 UK and 637 Australian dog owners and found 55% of US respondents restrained their dog in the vehicle, with a cage or crate in the cargo area the most common method in both the US and the UK. A crated dog occupies a fixed position relative to the vents and cannot increase its distance from an odour source, so the exposure it receives is set entirely by where a human placed the source and which ventilation setting the human chose. In a home, an animal's discomfort produces relocation; in a restrained car position, the same discomfort produces no change in exposure at all.

This is also the reason we treat cats in cars as a stronger caution than dogs. Cats travel in closed carriers, which is the least ventilated position in an already small cabin — and the metabolic difference is real: cats lack a functional UGT1A6 enzyme, the gene being a pseudogene disabled by five deleterious mutations in its coding region, so they glucuronidate many aromatic and phenolic compounds far more slowly than dogs or humans do (Court & Greenblatt, 2000). None of this means a scented car is dangerous. It means the margin of error you rely on at home has been removed, so the settings have to do the work instead.


What should you check before putting any scent in a car with a pet?

Six things, in order of how much they change the answer.

3. We publish no CAS numbers anywhere.
