In a study of 200 migraine patients, 70% developed a headache after a mean of 25.5 minutes of odor exposure, and perfume was the single most common trigger, named in 75.7% of those cases (Silva-Néto et al., 2014). Now the caveat that most articles like this one leave out. That same study calculated realistic indoor exposure scenarios from its measured emission rates and compared them against indoor guidance and reference values — and in most cases, the modeled concentrations came in well below those values, with exceptions in some cases for nitrogen dioxide, acrolein, and benzo[a]pyrene (Salthammer et al., 2021). Read that honestly and it cuts against the scary version of the candle story: this is an exposure finding, not a proven-harm finding. Your candle headache is very unlikely to be combustion toxicity. It's much more likely to be the fragrance doing what fragrance does to a migraine-prone nervous system.
Which leaves a real and much narrower case against the flame, worth stating precisely:
- The combustion stream is optional. It is the one part of a candle that a flameless format removes completely — not reduces, removes. There's no argument about whether soot is bad for you at a given dose if there's no soot.
- The wax label doesn't predict it. In order of evidence, starting with the one that costs nothing and sells us nothing.

- Fix the odor at the source instead of covering it.
